Tsunami is the occurrence of massive waves, which displaces the locality. Moreover, this is the displacement of large amounts of water due to shifts in tectonic plates. The tectonic movements can be the effect of volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. The gravitational pull of both the Earth and its Moon effects these tidal waves. The wavelengths of these currents are longer in comparison to normal ones. The creation of the Biggest Tsunami is due to the displacement of any substantial material in water. Location Of The Lituya Bay
This is 7 miles long, and a 2 miles wide Bay in the North-Eastern part of Alaska. Moreover, this Bay is in the shape of a “T.” The two ends of the inlets are Gilbert Inlet and the Crillon Inlet. The trench is a part of the Fairweather Fault line. There is an island in the central part of the bay- Cenotaph Island. The North Crillon and Lituya glaciers are approximately 12 miles in length. The headwalls of this Bay are like fjords. The elevation is nearly 2,200 to 3, 400 feet both in the north and south directions. However, rocky beaches surround the Bay from both directions.
Main Cause Of The Biggest Tsunami
In the year 1953, geologists searched for natural oil in Alaska. Moreover, the exact location of the place was Lituya Bay. The geologists felt the presence of oil near the shorelines, because of the trees. There were no mature trees near the shores. Trees collect moisture and minerals from the soil. Therefore, the presence of oil acts as a barrier to its growth.
The gap between the mature trees and the shoreline is the trim line. The side of the trees towards the trim line was weak and lacked growth. The scientists felt the occurrence of the tsunami in this deglaciated fjord. The steep slopes at the fault line offer the possibility of a tsunami due to landslide. A massive earthquake occurred on 9th July 1958 at the South-eastern part of Alaska. Million tons of ice, rocks, and substances fell into the waters. The gigantic land block fell in the Bay waters and struck the floor. This led to the rise of a massive wave or the megatsunami.
Analysis Of The Alaska Biggest Tsunami
The Tsunami Society studied the case of the Lituya Bay in 1999. Moreover, again, in the year 2010, geologists again studied the place. The earthquake, landslide, and the water drainage jointly led to the megatsunami. The sudden fall of 40 million cubic yards of rocks and ice allowed massive waves. Therefore, fracture occurred in the maximum part of the coastline. The rockfall dragged the air along with it due to the viscosity effect. The volume of the rockfall enhances due to this air movement. The 2010 study reveals the occurrence of the double slide during that event. Many groups created models to study the exact environmental survey of Lituya Bay.
